As artificial intelligence dramatically accelerates the speed at which software is written, a new bottleneck has emerged: validating the growing flood of code before it reaches production. Blacksmith, a startup focused on AI-powered code testing and verification, has capitalized on that shift with a fresh $45 million round that values the company at $550 million — a nearly tenfold increase from its previous valuation less than a year ago.

The Series B round was led by Peak XV Partners, with participation from existing investors GV and Y Combinator. The new funding brings Blacksmith’s total raised to $58.5 million. Just under a year ago, the company raised a $10 million Series A at a $60 million valuation, making the latest round a striking vote of confidence from investors who see code validation as one of the most critical layers in the modern software development stack.

Founded in 2024, Blacksmith helps companies build, test, and verify software before it goes live. The startup has grown rapidly, now serving more than 5,000 customers, including Mercury, Supabase, Clerk, Ashby, and Expensify. That customer base has expanded dramatically from the 700-plus customers the company reported less than a year ago, according to co-founder and CEO Aditya Jayaprakash.

The rise of AI coding tools such as Cursor, OpenAI's Codex, and Anthropic's Claude Code has made it significantly easier for software teams to generate code at scale. But the quality of AI-generated code is not guaranteed, and the industry is learning that writing code faster creates new challenges in testing and quality assurance.

“Validating code is still a bottleneck, and it’s an even bigger bottleneck because people are writing even more,” Jayaprakash said in an exclusive interview.

Blacksmith originally launched as a cloud provider for continuous integration (CI) workloads, helping companies run the software builds and tests needed to validate code before it reaches production. CI has become a standard practice in modern software development, allowing teams to automatically test every change they make to a codebase. But as AI tools accelerate code production, traditional CI systems are struggling to keep up with the volume and complexity of changes.

The company has since broadened its platform with Codesmith, an AI coding agent that can automatically fix failed code checks. This move positions Blacksmith not just as a testing infrastructure provider, but as an active participant in the code repair process. Instead of simply flagging errors, Codesmith can analyze the failure, propose a fix, and in many cases resolve the issue automatically, freeing developers to focus on more complex problems.

Rapid Revenue Growth and a Lean Team

Jayaprakash said Blacksmith reached a $10 million annualized revenue run rate with just 10 employees. Since then, the company has grown its workforce to about 30 people and revenue to “tens of millions of dollars.” He declined to provide a specific updated ARR figure, though he noted that some of its largest customers now spend more than $1 million a year on the platform.

That kind of revenue trajectory is notable in the developer tools space, where many startups struggle to convert free users into paying customers. Blacksmith’s focus on enterprise needs, combined with the urgency around AI code quality, appears to have accelerated adoption.

The lean team structure also reflects the company’s own use of automation and AI. With only 30 employees serving thousands of customers, Blacksmith relies heavily on its platform to handle repetitive tasks and ensure that its infrastructure scales efficiently. This approach mirrors the broader trend of AI-native companies achieving more with smaller teams.

The Growing Challenge of AI-Generated Code

The software industry is undergoing a fundamental shift. Tools like Cursor, Codex, and Claude Code allow developers to generate entire functions, modules, and even full applications with simple natural language prompts. According to multiple industry analyses, developers are now writing and shipping code at a pace that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

However, this acceleration has a downside. AI models are trained on existing code, and they can produce outputs that are syntactically correct but logically flawed, insecure, or incompatible with the rest of a codebase. Without rigorous testing and validation, AI-generated code can introduce bugs, security vulnerabilities, and performance issues into production environments.

Blacksmith aims to solve that problem by providing a platform that not only runs tests efficiently but also uses AI to triage and fix failures. This creates a feedback loop where code is generated, tested, and repaired automatically, reducing the burden on human developers while maintaining quality standards.

Industry observers note that the market for AI code testing is still nascent but expanding rapidly. As more companies adopt AI-assisted development workflows, the demand for robust testing and validation tools is expected to grow in tandem. Blacksmith’s rapid valuation growth reflects investor belief that the company is well positioned to capture a significant share of this emerging market.

Competitive Landscape and Differentiation

Blacksmith operates in a crowded and increasingly competitive market. Its key rivals include GitHub Actions, Cursor Automations, validation capabilities built directly into OpenAI’s Codex and Anthropic’s Claude Code, and a host of other startups. Additionally, major cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud have introduced AI code-testing services, adding significant pressure to the space.

Jayaprakash said his startup is competing on the speed of testing code as well as affordability. Blacksmith has designed its platform to run tests faster and more cost-effectively than many alternatives, which is a critical differentiator in a world where developers are running more tests than ever before.

“Speed is essential,” Jayaprakash said. “If a developer has to wait a long time to learn whether their code works, they lose momentum. And if a company has to spend a huge amount on CI infrastructure, it becomes a blocker. We are focused on addressing both.”

Blacksmith also differentiates itself through its AI-native approach. Rather than bolting AI onto an existing CI system, the company built its platform from the ground up with AI capabilities integrated into every layer. That design allows Codesmith to identify patterns in failed tests and automatically generate fixes, which is harder to achieve with legacy testing tools.

The company’s customer roster includes fast-growing startups and established enterprises, which suggests its value proposition resonates across different segments. By serving companies like Mercury and Expensify, Blacksmith has demonstrated that it can handle the needs of both modern fintech upstarts and established software companies with complex testing requirements.

Expansion Plans and Future Direction

Looking ahead, Jayaprakash said Blacksmith plans to expand into a broader suite of coding tools, aiming to help developers write, validate, and merge software faster. The company’s vision extends beyond testing and repair; it aspires to be a central part of the entire software development lifecycle.

This could include deeper integration with code review systems, automated deployment pipelines, and possibly tools that help developers understand the impact of changes before they merge them. Blacksmith may also explore partnerships with AI coding assistant providers, allowing those platforms to offer built-in testing and validation through Blacksmith’s infrastructure.

As AI continues to reshape software development, the line between coding and testing is blurring. Companies that can seamlessly combine both functions will likely have a competitive advantage. Blacksmith’s early momentum and strong customer growth suggest it is on a promising trajectory, but the company faces significant challenges in a market where large players are also investing heavily.

The new financing gives Blacksmith resources to expand its engineering team, ramp up product development, and increase its go-to-market efforts. With a valuation of $550 million and a track record of rapid growth, the company is now positioned to play a major role in the next phase of AI-driven software engineering.

While the competitive pressure is intense, Blacksmith’s focus on speed, affordability, and AI-native solutions may help it stay ahead. The company’s revenue growth and customer retention will be key indicators of whether it can maintain its momentum. For now, the startup appears to be riding a wave of demand that shows no signs of slowing down.
