ByteDance's program, for instance, immerses selected teenagers in real-world AI projects, mentored by senior researchers. Teenagers, with their plasticity and willingness to experiment, are seen as blank slates that can be shaped to a company's specific needs. Instead, the company focuses on curiosity and raw ability during its recruitment process. This shift is not unique to China. Google co-founder Sergey Brin has acknowledged that the company is increasingly open to hiring people without a bachelor's degree. Similarly, Apple and Microsoft have relaxed educational requirements for certain AI roles, emphasizing portfolio work and problem-solving tests.

This trend is rewriting who gets considered for jobs. Degrees, age, and traditional resumes are starting to matter less than demonstrable skills and passion. For teenagers, this means that a strong GitHub profile or a winning Kaggle competition entry can open doors that were previously locked. However, it also raises questions about fairness and ethics. Recruiting minors involves navigating child labor laws, educational obligations, and psychological development. Critics argue that such programs may pressure teenagers to specialize too early, sacrificing a broad education for narrow job readiness.

However, the scale and intensity of China's effort are notable. The Chinese government has also encouraged AI education from primary school, integrating basic coding and data literacy into the national curriculum. The long-term impact on the labor market could be profound. If companies continue to recruit teenagers, the signaling value of a university degree may decline further. AI skills may become a new currency, and early specialization could become the norm for technical roles. Ethical guidelines for recruiting minors in AI are still nascent, and both companies and regulators are playing catch-up.

China's tech giants are betting that identifying and nurturing talent early will give them an edge in the global AI race.
