OpenAI relaunches Apple Health-connected ChatGPT feature with expanded access

OpenAI is relaunching Health in ChatGPT, the AI-powered feature that connects to Apple Health on iPhone. The relaunch comes with expanded access and a big step forward in results, marking a renewed push into the healthcare space by the artificial intelligence company.

OpenAI originally started piloting its ChatGPT Health feature in January. Early feedback reported lackluster results, however, which is probably why the feature had not been heard from in months. The initial pilot was limited to a small group of testers, who found that the AI struggled to provide meaningful insights from their Apple Health data. Users noted that the responses were often generic or failed to take into account the full context of their health profiles.

Today, OpenAI is reintroducing ChatGPT Health and expanding access beyond the initial wave of testers. The company says the new version builds on feedback from the initial round of testing. In a press release, OpenAI stated: "Health in ChatGPT is launching to U.S. users. You can choose to securely connect Apple Health and supported medical records so ChatGPT can help you understand your information in context, keep track of what has changed, and have more informed, personalized conversations."

OpenAI adds that with user permission, ChatGPT can now draw on relevant information connected in Health to help compare a new result with prior tests, summarize changes since the last appointment, or explore how sleep, activity, and workouts relate to a user's routine. This represents a significant improvement over the original version, which was unable to effectively correlate different data points over time.

ChatGPT Health should also benefit from OpenAI improving its frontier models since the start of this year. The company has released several major updates to its language models, including GPT-4o and GPT-4 Turbo, which offer better reasoning, longer context windows, and more nuanced understanding of complex data. These improvements are expected to make the health feature far more capable than the initial pilot version.

OpenAI says it is beginning to roll out Health to logged-in ChatGPT users 18 and older in the U.S. on web and iOS across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans today. Users can open Health from the sidebar in ChatGPT to get started. The feature is not yet available in Codex.

The relaunch of ChatGPT Health comes at a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly being integrated into healthcare applications. Many companies are exploring how large language models can assist with medical information retrieval, symptom analysis, and personal health management. However, privacy and data security remain major concerns. OpenAI has emphasized that health data connected through Apple Health is encrypted and handled with strict privacy controls, and users must explicitly grant permission for each use.

Apple Health itself has become a central repository for health data on iPhone, aggregating information from the Apple Watch, other connected devices, and third-party apps. The data includes everything from heart rate and sleep patterns to blood glucose and lab results. By connecting ChatGPT to this data, OpenAI aims to provide a conversational interface that helps users make sense of their health metrics without needing to manually sift through charts and reports.

This move also positions OpenAI in direct competition with other health-focused AI tools, such as those offered by Google via Fitbit and its Health Connect platform, as well as specialized medical AI assistants from companies like Ada Health and Babylon. However, ChatGPT's broad user base and general-purpose capabilities give it a unique advantage: millions of people already use ChatGPT for everyday tasks, and adding health functionality could make it a one-stop shop for personal assistant needs.

The healthcare industry has long struggled with patient engagement and health literacy. Many individuals have access to their health data through portals and apps but do not know how to interpret trends or identify important changes. An AI that can process natural language queries and provide context-aware insights could help bridge that gap. For example, a user might ask ChatGPT to explain why their resting heart rate has increased over the past week, and the AI could correlate that with changes in sleep, activity, or stress levels recorded in Apple Health.

However, experts caution that AI health advice should not replace professional medical guidance. OpenAI has stated that ChatGPT Health is not intended for diagnosis or treatment recommendations. The company has implemented safeguards to ensure the AI does not give medical advice that could be harmful. The feature is designed to help users understand their data and prepare for conversations with healthcare providers.

The initial pilot's failures highlighted the challenges of applying general-purpose AI to specialized domains like health. Language models trained on internet text may not have the nuanced understanding of medical data that is required. OpenAI's improvements to its models over the past year, including fine-tuning on medical text and collaboration with healthcare institutions, likely contributed to the relaunched version's enhanced performance.

Looking ahead, the integration of AI with personal health data is likely to become more common. Apple itself has been rumored to be working on a more advanced health coaching feature that might use AI to provide personalized recommendations. By getting an early start with ChatGPT Health, OpenAI is establishing a foothold in the consumer health AI space, even as it navigates regulatory and privacy challenges.

The expansion to all U.S. users over 18, including those on free plans, suggests that OpenAI is confident in the feature's reliability and safety. The company has not announced plans for international rollout, but given the global reach of both ChatGPT and Apple Health, it is likely that other regions will follow after initial U.S. feedback is gathered.

Overall, the relaunch of ChatGPT Health represents a maturing of AI's role in personal health management. While the first attempt was underwhelming, the second version shows promise by leveraging improved models and user feedback. As with any technology that handles sensitive health data, ongoing scrutiny of privacy practices and accuracy will be essential. For now, users in the U.S. can experiment with the new feature directly within the ChatGPT interface, potentially gaining valuable insights from their Apple Health data.
