All about Jeff Bezos’s 4 children, aka the Amazon founder’s billionaire heirs

When he is not running billion-dollar companies, Jeff Bezos is managing a busy household as a father of four. The Amazon founder shares three sons and one daughter with his ex-wife, philanthropist and novelist MacKenzie Scott. Only his oldest son Preston’s name is known to the public, as the mogul fiercely protects the privacy of his heirs.

Bezos is also stepfather to wife Lauren Sánchez’s three children from previous relationships: sons Nikko Gonzalez and Evan Whitesell and daughter Ella Whitesell. The pair have referred to their blended family as “The Brady Bunch,” including in a 2023 interview Sánchez did with the Wall Street Journal.

The children’s names and ages remain largely unknown

Various sources report that Bezos and Scott’s first child, Preston Bezos, was born in 2000. The oldest Bezos child shares his first name with his father—Preston is the entrepreneur’s middle name. Bezos’s maternal grandfather, Lawrence Preston Gise, and his great grandfather, Lloyd Preston Gise, also share the moniker, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2011.

The names of Bezos and Scott’s three younger children are unknown, as are their ages. CNN reported in 2013 that Bezos and Scott’s daughter was welcomed via adoption. In a 2017 appearance at Summit LA17, Bezos indicated that his youngest child was 12 years old, meaning all of his kids are now adults.

This level of privacy is intentional. Bezos, worth over $200 billion, has often emphasized the importance of allowing his children to grow up away from the media glare. In a 2018 conversation with the Economic Club of Washington D.C., he said, “They’re very, very mature. Kids are smart. They know what’s going on.”

Upbringing and parenting philosophy

Bezos’s children may have had a different upbringing than most, but their mother tried to keep them grounded. MacKenzie Scott opened up about eschewing nannies in favor of hands-on parenting in a 2013 Vogue interview, even sharing her attempt to homeschool her kids while she put her writing career on hold.

“We tried all sorts of things, including off-season travel, kitchen-science experiments, chicken incubation, Mandarin lessons, the Singapore math program, and lots of clubs and sports with other neighborhood kids,” she told the publication. Eventually, Scott put them in school to refocus on her writing and to avoid isolating them from peers because of their family’s wealth, a close friend told Vogue.

Her kids did have some peers to relate to: the children of Melinda French Gates and billionaire Bill Gates. French Gates shared in a 2024 New York Times interview that she was encouraged by the similarities between her and Scott’s parenting philosophies. “I could see a bit how (Scott) was parenting, and I knew we had quite similar philosophies, actually...I knew she was trying to raise her kids, literally just down the street from me, in essentially the same way,” the ex-wife of the Microsoft co-founder explained.

Bezos himself has revealed unconventional parenting tactics. During a 2017 appearance at Summit LA17, the Washington Post owner revealed a surprising practice he and Scott used to nurture resourcefulness. “Our kids, even now—they’re 17 through 12, but even when they were 4, we would let them use our knives,” he said. “By the time they were, I don’t know, maybe 7 or 8, we would let them use certain power tools.” He credited his ex-wife with inspiring the sharp idea. “She said, ‘I would much rather have a kid with nine fingers than a resourceless kid.’ Which I just think is a fantastic attitude about life,” he recalled, clarifying that his kids thankfully had all 10 fingers.

As the children got older, their parents found new ways to bond with them. In 2019, Bezos took to Instagram to share how, like many dads, he enjoyed watching TV with his crew. “Binged Stranger Things Season 3 yesterday with my kids and a few of their friends. God, Eggos are good, and the show was even better. Awesome season,” he captioned a picture of a box of Eggo waffles against a Stranger Things-themed backdrop.

Preston’s college graduation and academic career

At a 2018 conference, Bezos recalled moving his son Preston into college. “I helped him move into his dorm with my wife, and it was bittersweet. [...] I didn’t get sad until the day before,” the mogul added of the relatable parenting experience. While Bezos never publicly confirmed which university his oldest child attended, Preston’s name appears in the program for MIT’s 2022 commencement ceremony. According to the document, he received a Bachelor of Science in Humanities and Engineering.

Photos published by The Daily Mail showed Bezos and then-girlfriend Sanchez in attendance at MIT’s commencement ceremony in 2022, although the publication couldn’t confirm Preston’s enrollment at the time. A 2023 Vogue profile reported that Bezos's other children were also in college, though specific institutions have not been disclosed. This aligns with Bezos’s own academic history: he graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1986 with degrees in electrical engineering and computer science.

Morning routines and shielding from wealth

The Internet has long been fascinated with the morning routines of the rich and famous, and Bezos is no exception. He revealed his surprisingly low-key daily rituals in a September 2018 conversation with David M. Rubenstein, president of the Economic Club of Washington D.C. “I like to putter in the morning, so I like to read the newspaper, I like to have coffee, [and] I like to have breakfast with my kids before they go to school,” the entrepreneur said.

In the same conversation, he was asked how he shields his children from the effects of his immense wealth. “I don’t really shield them,” he explained. “They’re very, very mature. Kids are smart. They know what’s going on. My oldest son, when he was 12, I asked him, ‘Do your classmates ever talk about me?’ [He said,] ‘Oh, sure.’ ‘What do you tell them?’ ‘I tell them my life is normal to me.’ And I thought, wow, that’s so profound, because everybody’s life is normal to them. We all have that.”

This philosophy echoes the way Bezos himself was raised. His mother, Jacklyn, and stepfather, Miguel Bezos, provided a stable, middle-class upbringing in Miami. Bezos has often credited his family with instilling a sense of curiosity and risk-taking that later fueled his entrepreneurial drive.

Rare public appearances with the children

Bezos is always out and about, but it’s rarer for him to have his kids in tow. In 2020, he took his son Preston to the Oscars. Amazon’s French film Les Misérables was up for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. Comedian Chris Rock took a jab at Bezos during the show, per Variety, joking, “Jeff Bezos was so rich he got divorced and he’s still the richest man in the world. He saw Marriage Story and thought it was a comedy.” The camera cut to the audience, where Bezos and Preston were seen laughing side-by-side at the light roast.

Back in 2016, he appeared at the Star Trek Beyond premiere in San Diego with ex-wife Scott and all four children in tow. The Blue Origin founder, who has a long-held fascination with space exploration, had a brief cameo in the film as an alien, AP reported. That red carpet moment remains one of the few times the entire Bezos-Scott family was photographed together.

Another notable family moment occurred at Bezos’s wedding to Lauren Sánchez in June 2025. The lavish, star-studded ceremony included speeches from all four of his children. In a 2026 interview with Extra, the new Mrs. Bezos revealed the moment that left her “bawling.” “All of our kids gave speeches, mine and Jeff’s, and they were all so meaningful…and they were all extremely emotional and loving and I think they made the wedding what it was,” she shared, adding that she “started bawling” during her daughter Ella’s speech. She added elsewhere, “We had so much fun. It was incredible being there with, you know, all of our kids, our family, our best friends, and we danced all night.”

The wedding highlighted the blended family dynamic. Bezos’s children have reportedly bonded with Sánchez’s kids, with the couple often referring to themselves as a modern-day “Brady Bunch.” This integration reflects a broader trend among ultra-wealthy families who remarry and merge households, navigating the complexities of inheritance and family politics.

Privacy and the future of the Bezos heirs

Despite their father’s global fame, the Bezos children have remained remarkably private. They have no public social media accounts, and their names and faces are rarely seen in media. This is a deliberate strategy. Bezos has said that he wants his kids to have the freedom to choose their own paths without the burden of his legacy. “I want them to be able to make their own mistakes and find their own way,” he once noted.

Their mother, MacKenzie Scott, has also protected their privacy. After divorcing Bezos in 2019, Scott received a 4% stake in Amazon worth about $38 billion at the time. She has since become one of the world’s most prolific philanthropists, giving away billions to charities. However, she has never used her children for publicity, and her rare interviews focus on her writing and giving rather than family life.

The Bezos children stand to inherit a significant portion of their parents’ wealth, though exact figures are unknown. In 2022, Bezos announced plans to give away most of his fortune during his lifetime, but that likely doesn’t exclude provision for his children. With a net worth exceeding $200 billion, even a small percentage would make them among the wealthiest heirs in the world.

As the children reach adulthood, speculation about their career choices grows. Preston’s MIT degree in humanities and engineering suggests a potential blend of technical and creative skills. Reports indicate he has interned at Amazon and Blue Origin, but no official role has been confirmed. The other children are believed to be pursuing studies in fields ranging from medicine to the arts.

Their father’s own career trajectory—from a Princeton grad to a hedge fund analyst to the founder of Amazon—shows how diverse paths can lead to success. Whether the Bezos children follow in his footsteps or forge entirely different roads, their upbringing has been carefully designed to prepare them for either outcome.

In a world where celebrity children often become tabloid fodder, the Bezos heirs remain an enigma. Their parents’ commitment to privacy has allowed them to experience a semblance of normalcy—if such a thing exists for the offspring of one of the richest people on Earth. As they enter their twenties, the public may get glimpses of their personalities, but for now, the Bezos children are a story of measured protection, intentional parenting, and the quiet preparation for a life of immense opportunity.
