ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude all went down at the same time

On Thursday, three of the most widely used generative AI chatbots stopped returning answers at nearly the same moment. ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude each showed outage symptoms or status-page incidents within a window of about 90 minutes, leaving many people unable to access services they had already begun to rely on for writing, coding, research, image generation, and everyday conversation.

The disruption was not a single-company problem. OpenAI's ChatGPT, xAI's Grok, and Anthropic's Claude all went down around the same time, triggering reports from users across multiple platforms. By early afternoon, all three services had been restored or were recovering, but the event served as a reminder that even the most advanced AI systems depend on physical data centers, network connections, and software stacks that can fail.

What happened and when

The three outages followed a roughly similar trajectory but affected users at slightly different moments:

  • Grok began failing at approximately 9:30AM ET across Android, iOS, and the web. Users who tried to prompt the chatbot on X saw a message saying: “This model is overloaded right now. Please try again shortly or pick a different model.”
  • ChatGPT started showing elevated errors around 11AM ET, according to OpenAI's status page. The problems were spread across ChatGPT and Codex, OpenAI's coding assistant.
  • Anthropic's Claude chatbot, Claude Code, and the Claude API went down around the same time. Anthropic described the issue as an “infrastructure issue” that caused a partial outage across its services.
  • By 12:15PM ET, Anthropic said the problem had been resolved. OpenAI and xAI also restored service for most users shortly afterward.

The overlapping timing immediately raised questions about whether the outages were connected. At this point, no evidence has been released showing a single shared cause. OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic run separate platforms with different technical architectures, yet their simultaneous failure suggests that the AI industry as a whole may be exposed to shared vulnerabilities or external conditions.

ChatGPT outages and product timing

For ChatGPT users, the outage was unusually broad. The problem affected not only new conversations but also logins, file uploads, voice mode, search, deep research, and image generation. Even users who had already managed to open the app could not reliably continue their existing chats. The incident occurred just as OpenAI was teasing Astra, its next AI model, which made the timing particularly awkward for a company trying to show that its platform is ready for the next generation of consumer AI products.

The breadth of the ChatGPT outage suggested the issue sat deep in the service layer rather than in a single feature or model. Authentication, storage, response generation, search, and multimodal tools all rely on backend systems that must communicate with one another. If one of those systems fails, the effect can cascade into what feels like a full platform shutdown.

OpenAI's status page said there were “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex,” but it did not provide an immediate explanation of what had gone wrong. The lack of detailed transparency is common during an incident, but it also created uncertainty for businesses that use the company's API and tools to run their own products.

Claude and the infrastructure problem

Anthropic's outage was described by the company as a partial outage caused by an “infrastructure issue.” The wording was important because it signaled that Claude itself was not the only component affected. Claude Code, Anthropic's terminal-based coding assistant, and the Claude API were also down. For developers who use Claude's API to build customer-service chatbots, summarization tools, and internal knowledge assistants, an API outage can bring an entire product to a halt.

The fact that Claude, Claude Code, and the API all failed at the same time suggests that the issue occurred at a shared layer, such as compute orchestration, network access, or database connectivity. Anthropic's engineering team identified the problem and restored service around 12:15PM ET, but not before many companies had already noticed the impact.

Anthropic has positioned Claude as a safe and useful assistant for enterprise customers, often highlighting features like extended context windows and its constitutional AI approach. A public outage does not erase that reputation, but it does remind enterprise buyers that AI reliability is a competitive and operational issue, not just a research one.

Grok and the Memphis data center

xAI's Grok experienced a separate outage across Android, iOS, and the web. For many users, the first sign of trouble appeared on X, where Grok is integrated as a native assistant. When they tried to prompt the model, the platform responded with an overloaded error message instead of generating an answer.

xAI later linked the problem to an outage at its data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The Memphis facility is central to xAI's ambitions and is home to what the company has described as one of the largest AI supercomputers in the world, known as Colossus. That system was built rapidly and expanded in phases, with thousands of GPUs working together to train and serve xAI's models.

A data-center outage can affect every service built on that hardware. When power, cooling, or network equipment fails, models cannot be loaded into memory, inference requests cannot be processed, and user traffic is redirected or simply dropped. Grok's error message telling users that the model was overloaded may have been a symptom of the underlying data-center problem rather than a shortage of model capacity caused by too many users.

The Grok outage also showed how dependent X is on xAI's infrastructure. Grok is a major feature of the X platform, and many users see it as a reason to subscribe to X Premium. When Grok disappeared, one of X's most visible premium features disappeared with it.

A shared moment, but not necessarily a shared cause

Three separate AI companies experiencing problems on the same morning is a statistical and operational anomaly. It is possible that the outages were coincidental, driven by different breakdowns at different parts of the internet. But it is also possible that broader factors played a role. For example, AI companies depend on cloud providers, internet backbone providers, domain-name systems, content-delivery networks, and other centralized services. A problem at any one of those underlying layers could cause errors at several otherwise unrelated companies.

The incident also highlighted how much AI infrastructure can resemble a small number of giant, concentrated systems. While the three companies operate different models, they all need enormous numbers of GPUs, high-speed networking, and sophisticated model-serving software. Power constraints and cooling requirements often push companies to build giant data centers in selected regions, creating single points of failure for services that can feel omnipresent to users.

When natural language interfaces become part of daily life, reliability becomes more important than raw intelligence. A model that can write a perfect essay is less useful if it cannot be reached in the middle of a workday. The simultaneous outage shows that the AI industry has reached a new maturity level: these products are no longer experiments. People use them for work, for communication, and for entertainment, and every minute of downtime has real consequences.

What the outages reveal about AI adoption

Even in a single workday, a short AI outage can disrupt many activities. Lawyers draft memoranda with Claude. Developers debug code with ChatGPT and Grok. Students research topics. Writers use AI to brainstorm. Customer-service teams rely on AI-powered agents to answer routine questions. When all of these tools go dark at the same time, users are forced to remember how quickly they have integrated AI into their workflows.

The interruption also exposed the limits of the “AI as everything” vision. Companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI are racing to build advanced models that can handle text, images, voice, and even real-time interactions. But as these models grow more capable, the systems supporting them become more complex. A sophisticated model is not useful unless it can be delivered quickly, consistently, and at scale to millions of people at the same moment.

For businesses, the event is a useful reminder to build redundancy into their AI strategies. Relying exclusively on one chatbot or one API provider can be risky. Companies that use AI as a core part of their product may need backup models, automated failover, or at least a clear communication plan for when their preferred provider goes down. Individual users, too, may start to keep more than one AI tool installed on their phones.

None of the companies involved has yet explained whether there was any technical relationship among the three outages. Requests for comment from OpenAI, xAI, and Anthropic did not immediately receive responses at the time of reporting. It may turn out that the timing was a coincidence, or new information may emerge showing that all three services were affected by a common infrastructure dependency. In the meantime, the most measurable fact is that the internet's most visible AI assistants were offline together for a brief period and then returned to normal.

The incident is unlikely to stop the wider push toward AI-native interfaces. OpenAI's Astra is still expected to arrive, xAI continues to expand its computing capacity, and Anthropic remains focused on enterprise AI. But Thursday's outages are a reminder that impressive models are only one part of creating a reliable AI ecosystem. The physical infrastructure that runs them, the software that connects them, and the teams that maintain them are just as important as the science that makes them intelligent.
