The 2026 District 1 Track and Field Championships kicked off Friday at Coatesville High School with a flurry of outstanding performances. Among the highlights, Gwynedd Mercy Academy senior Reese Miller shattered the meet record in the Girls Class 3A 1,600 meters, while North Penn senior Justin Landis claimed gold in the boys distance race. The event also saw strong team performances, with North Penn leading the Boys 3A standings and Faith Christian dominating Class 2A.
Miller's Record-Breaking Run
Reese Miller, a senior at Gwynedd Mercy Academy, delivered a masterful performance in the 1,600 meters. Her opening 400 meters was clocked at 1:08.28, the fastest first lap of any runner in the field. She maintained her lead throughout, finishing with a time of 4:48.04. This time bested the previous meet record of 4:48.28 set by Haverford's Olivia Cieslak in 2024. Miller's victory highlighted a deep field that included several local athletes. Upper Dublin's Faith Castronuovo took second in 4:55.85, Lower Moreland's Annie Moniz earned third at 4:57.27, and Central Bucks East's Isha Awasthi placed fourth at 4:57.36. East's Mattelyn Williams came in sixth (4:59.60), while Wissahickon's Berkeley Marcelis was eighth (5:04.93).
Miller's achievement is a testament to her hard work and consistency throughout her high school career. She has been a standout distance runner for Gwynedd Mercy, consistently placing among the top in state meets. Breaking a district record set by a talented athlete like Cieslak underscores Miller's potential as she heads into the state championship meet.
Landis Edges Gosling for Boys Gold
In the Boys Class 3A 1,600 meters, North Penn's Justin Landis, a Penn State commit, secured the gold medal with a time of 4:15.45. He narrowly defeated Council Rock North's Matt Gosling, who finished in 4:15.80 for the silver medal. The race was a classic duel, with Landis using a strong final kick to edge ahead in the final straight. This victory was particularly sweet for Landis, who had placed second in the same event at districts last year. His performance also helped North Penn in the team standings.
Methacton's Colin O'Donnell took third in 4:16.60, while North Penn's Musa Herzi finished fifth with a time of 4:18.26. Landis had earlier run on North Penn's 4x800 relay team that placed fourth, demonstrating his versatility and endurance.
